Cosmetic Dentistry FAQs
What is cosmetic dentistry and how does it differ from general dentistry?
Cosmetic dentistry is concentrated on altering and improving the appearance of the teeth and smile. While general dentistry has the main objective of helping patients achieve healthy teeth and gums, it typically does not deal with the appearance of the teeth unless functionality is an oral health concern. Cosmetic dentistry takes both the element of aesthetics and function into consideration when providing treatment. Common cosmetic dental treatments include:
- Teeth whitening
- Tooth colored fillings
- Dental implants
Why should I see a cosmetic dentist?
Cosmetic dentists have a specialty in effectively providing a variety of treatments that are designed to enhance your smile. While most general dentists are able to perform certain cosmetic dental procedures, it is always best to seek a specialist for a focused procedure. Cosmetic dentists have the unique skill set to correct discolored or stained teeth, gaps between the teeth, chipped teeth, and expertly placed veneers. Highland Village Dental is proud to provide quality dental services by our esteemed cosmetic dentists.
How long will cosmetic dental treatment take?
Just as every person is different, every cosmetic dental procedure is also different and depends on the patients' needs and desires. While some cosmetic procedures are relatively simple and can typically be completed in one dental visit (e.g. dental veneers and teeth whitening), there are other procedures that will take longer and vary from patient to patient.
Will insurance cover cosmetic dental procedures?
Insurance coverage varies by carrier, but most insurance providers do not cover the cost of cosmetic dental procedures. Cosmetic dental procedure are classified under "elective procedures" and are typically not deemed necessary for the health of the mouth. We will gladly work with you to create a flexible finance plan to make it easier for you to cover the cost of cosmetic dentistry. We are always up-front with our patients so that they can choose the best option and best payment plan before any procedures are started.
Am I a good candidate for teeth whitening?
Patients who meet these criteria are typically good candidates for teeth whitening:
- In good general health
- Maintain good oral health care at home (i.e. brush at least twice a day, floss daily, receive regular dental cleanings and checkups)
- Have slightly discolored or yellowed teeth
- Wish to improve the appearance of their smiles for aesthetic purposes
- Have no physical health concerns
Are there any side effects with teeth whitening?
Teeth whitening is considered a safe cosmetic dental procedure, and does not typically affect patients negatively. Minor side effects may include:
- Increased tooth sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures
- White spots on the surface of the teeth or gums
- Nighttime whitening trays may cause additional gum sensitivity or irritation
